6/11/09 - Colca Canyon

We headed out to the Colca Canyon today to try and spot the condors which only appear for short periods each day. On the way we passed yet more glorious vistas and I'm beginning to have a fairly staggering number of landscape photographs.

We got out of our van about 30 minutes walk from the main observation point because our local guide said that we'd have a good chance of seeing the condors around there because it was the condors territory. We did indeed get to see a couple of condors. 30 minutes later. Circling directly above the tourist observation point. Oh how we laughed.

The problem with this canyon is now how much of a tourist trap it is. There were hundreds upon hundreds of us there and it diminished the experience somewhat. I'm just glad we arrived so early, as 2o minutes later the condors were off to sleep and there wouldn't be a good chance to see them again until tomorrow. If I were one of the many tourists arriving after this time, after the several hour long ride, and not seeing anything I imagine I'd be displeased.

Once we had had our lunch we set off on the five hour journey back to Arequipa. We were all looking forwards to the Inka Trail at this point as we've had enough of bus journeys for a while.
