31/1/10 - Update

Sorry the delay in posting.

I'm now settled into a house and my job is going well other than the fact that I no longer have finger prints (those tiles get really hot).

As predicted by several of my friends my first kangeroo sighting was roadkill. So were the second, third and fourth. In fact I really need to go and find a living one, they are meant to be all over the place.

Now that I have (nearly) everything sorted I can start using the weekends to go and see things, but other than that I'll basically just be living here which is not going to make for riveting posts. Therefore I'll only be updating the blog whenever something spectacular* happens.

So, until then...

18/1/10 - An Odd Day

So there I was, minding my own business when BAM! I had a car, a full time job and am looking for a house to live in for the next five months.

Go figure.

Oh right, details...

I now work for Vac to the Future, a company that specialises in removing pre existing insulation and replacing it with stuff that actually works. My job is to drive around in a smart car (automatics are ridiculously easy to drive) and measure peoples' houses so we can send them a quote for how much the work will cost. By far the best part of the job is my 4m telescopic ladder. I have yet to come across a customer that hasn't marvelled at it. Thankfuly Canberra is the easiest city ever to navigate given a basic map. I doubt it will take too long before I don't even need that.

All I need to do now is find a house share to live in. I've checked the prices and found them to work out a lot better than staying at a hostel for the whole stay.

Sweet Jeebas...

... Australia is ridiculously hot. Every time I leave an air conditioned place it is like walking into a furnace. My body does not appreciate 40 degrees Celsius and I look longingly at the pictures of Scotland covered in snow. I'm sure I'll get used to it*.

I'm in Canberra now looking for work. With the sheer number of bars and restaurants around here there has to be something, but if not I'll move on to Melbourne. This city is pretty nice, though.

I went to see Avatar 3D today on Daryl's recommendation. It was awesome. The plot is, as mentioned by nearly everyone, entirely unoriginal (Fern Gully sprang to mind) but I've never seen it done better. The world they created is stunning. I recommend it to anyone who hasn't seen it yet.

*I'm really not.

6/1/10 - Sydney

Today I went for a walk around Sydney with my cousin so that he could show me the main sights.

First up was the Sydney Harbour bridge. It is quite big.

Next we went to the opera house and I did my part in keeping it one of the most photographed buildings in the world.

As we went through the Botanic Gardens I got a photo with both of them at the same time. Go me.

After taking a picture of what is one of the more impressive skylines I've seen we went for dinner at a Wagamama we found. I haven't had ramen in ages.

Finally we headed over to Darling Harbour where I used my gorilla pod to get some night shots.

Though very impressive I've now seen most of what Sydney has to offer apparently (we were out for a long time).

During the evening we came across a didgeridoo shop. Martin seems to really want one and I was impressed by the shop owners ability to play them. Martin's attempts were hilarious but I'm certain he'll manage with practice if he chooses to buy one.

4/1/10 - Oz

I had an uneventful flight to Sydney today. I met my cousin Martin and we went out for a meal. As it turns out he'll be heading back to Scotland shortly for various reasons.

I'll spend a few days here and then I'm off to find somewhere I'd like to work for a while. Fun times once again.

1/1/10 - Happy New Year

An early start with most people being worse for wear. I myself was shattered and slept for most of the journey. Halfway through we switched drivers. I awoke to find us outside a house in a random suburb. We then proceeded to go into the house (which belonged to our next driver) and had cake. It was a somewhat odd occurrence.

Once we arrived back in Auckland my Stray tour was over. The last few days had really just been getting back to the start.

Note: The years can now go back to being pronounced "twenty ten" and so on. I feel it is important that everyone remembers this...

31/12/09 - Hogmanay

Was out til three, leaving at seven the next morning and got no sleep due to different people stumbling in at various times.

It was fun.

30/12/09 - Clouded Skies

We headed to Kaikoura today where whale watching, swimming with dolphins and other water related activities were meant to be awesome.

Unfortunately the weather was terrible (20 foot waves just beyond the bay) so everything was canceled.

As a consolation Seagull took us to see some seals that lay around doing nothing. Yep, that was the same.

Thankfully our hostel had plenty of films for us to watch.

29/12/09 - Big Blue

Today we headed to Christchurch, a city more English than England apparently. I could understand this once we got there, but first we would be passing over the hills into the largest flat area in New Zealand and passing by some glacial lakes.

Seagull said we were passing over some high point or another but seeing as it was under 1000m above sea level it didn't seem particularly impressive after South America.

The highlight of the days journey were the two glacial lakes we passed. The water is an insane shade of blue and really cool to look at.

In the evening I went out for dinner with a couple of people who I'd met earlier in the trip. Afterward we went to the bar that our hostel had where a Stray event was being held. Weird stuff ensued that I wont go into...

28/12/2009 - That's no moon...

Today was a very lazy day which ended when a small group of us went out to try the oft-touted Fergburger. The place was completely mobbed so we bought our burgers (I of course getting the biggest possible called "Big Al" - never one to back down from a challenge) and went to the park to eat them.

Most of the others had gone for the standard Fergburgers which were pretty big. Mine though was ridiculous. I should have taken a photo but forgot on account of being preoccupied trying to figure out how I was meant to get it into my mouth. I'd flattened it as much as possible and it was still taller than any burger I'd previously tasted/faced.

Thankfully someone else had taken a picture.

Two layers of beef, two layer of bacon, two layers of cheese, a fried egg, and a large stack of salad at the bottom.

Eventually I just went for it. It was indeed a delicious burger but at around the half way point that no longer mattered. All that was left was the fact that I would not be defeated by a burger.

Eventually I emerged victorious. We then went for icecream.
