2/11/09 - Dune(s)
We got a lot done today. We left early and got a boat trip to view some nearby islands which are considered to be a mini Galapagos. Having been to the Galapagos these didn't come across as spectacular but there was still plenty of wildlife to be seen as well as caves to sail through. Below is a photo of a few of the bird species present.
Seeing as we did so much today I've spent extra time on the post to get plenty of pictures in.
After the boat trip we had another coach journey beginning our trip towards Nasca. We stopped over at an Oasis first, though, where we spent several hours swimming, and more importantly, being driven around the desert and sandboarding.
This, as I hope you are able to gather from the pictures, is an immense amount of fun. How driving really fast around the desert and teaching people to sandboard can be called a job is beyond me. The dunes are very high and very steep and speeding down them has probably been the most fun I've had on the trip so far.
We made it a competition to see how far we could travel at the bottom and it was fairly close until the last dune where Rob won outright by a fairly large distance but at a hefty price. At the bottom it can get pretty rough and most of us slowed down to avoid pain in sensitive areas, but for the last one Rob just went for it. Paul and I watched with legs crossed as Rob went screaming past us, items flying from him and the man himself smacking repeatedly off the board. He did not feel so great after this.
Afterwards we took two American cars (they seemed very proud of the fact that they were old American cars for some reason) to Nasca.
Once we had arrived and settled in at Nasca we had dinner where I made a few discoveries. Firstly the Peruvian softdrink of choice, Inca Cola, is in fact Iron Bru only yellow. The second is that frying anything really does make it taste better. I'd never have thought of frying a banana...
Oh and yes, those dots are me.
